Lines

70mm | 1/60s | f/4 | ISO100

This is one of my few B&W images that I shot in B&W.  It take a different eye to find good B&W images in the world, and while this isn't one of the best examples I've always liked this shot.  Taken at Myriad Gardens in Oklahoma City, OK.

Locked

31mm | 1/125s | f/4.5 | ISO100 | 3-image HDR

I cam upon this door when walking through the small town of Micanopy.  Its easy to sometimes overlook the little details of the world and focus on the grand scenes.  I am often susceptible to this as I take a lot of landscapes.  But I try to keep my eyes open for the small things.

The processing is a little extreme, but I think it fits this image well.  It's an action from Matt Kloskowski call the "300 look".

Camden Memorial

10mm | 1/200s | f/6.3 | ISO100 | 3-image HDR

This past Christmas break I went on a tour of Camden, SC given by a coworker of my mom.  We stopped at this tiny church which now was in the back of a parking lot (pictures of the church will be posted eventually).  Next to the church was this little memorial.  The clouds were perfect that day for HDR.

I also learned on this tour that every other house in Camden is supposedly haunted.

Sarah & CJ

56mm | 1/250s | f/4 | ISO200
I recently went to Seaworld with Amy's sister Sarah and boyfriend CJ.  I brought my camera to take some nice pictures of us together to remember the trip by.  I don't personally like staged portraits but this picture jumped out at me from the bunch that I took.

Photo Of The Day (POTD)

The amount of pictures I process (and therefore post) has greatly diminished over the past few months.  This is due to many excuses, with a busy semester being the primary one.  But there should be nothing stopping me from spending the ~10 minutes to process and post one picture from my ever growing catalog every day. This method worked well with my Mediterranean Cruise pictures, with me posting 100 pictures to facebook in just over 3 months.

So starting today (April 1st) I will begin posting a Photo Of The Day (POTD) on this blog.  It will likely not be a picture taken on that day, but you never know.  It may or may not come with a description, depends on the picture and the day.  I hope people (Miguel) enjoy seeing these pictures and this leads to me being more proactive with posting pictures.

HDR Experiment: Number of Frames

During the HDR tutorial, I set the bracketing at 3 frames by 2-stops.  I personally use this setting because my camera will do this automatically.  Other cameras (D300s specifically) will allow 7 frames by 1-stop, and others up to 9 frames by 1-stop.

There are two different aspects to be tested here.

  • What range (+-EV) is necessary to capture?
  • Is a range of 1-stop better than a range of 2-stops?

This post will focus on the first aspect, what range is necessary to capture.  Throughout this experiment, the frames will be all 2-stops apart.

HDR Tutorial: Shooting

24mm | 1/250s | f/5.6 | ISO100 | 3-image HDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography has become very popular over the past few years.  I am fortunate to have started learning about it from near the beginning, and have become proficient in shooting and processing HDR images.  I am very overdue for writing this tutorial.  This first part will focus on shooting the bracketed images.  The next post will focus on post-processing.
